Pretreatment: First, sort the scrap copper to separate scrap copper of different types and purities; then crush and compact it for subsequent transportation and processing. For scrap copper with insulating layers or other impurities, it is also necessary to remove paint and peel it.
Smelting: The pretreated scrap copper is sent to the furnace for smelting. The copper is melted at high temperature, and the impurities will form slag floating on the surface or precipitate at the bottom, thereby separating copper from impurities. Depending on the purity and impurity content of the scrap copper, different smelting processes and equipment may be required, such as reverberatory furnace smelting, electric furnace smelting, etc.
Refining: The smelted copper usually needs to be refined to further improve the purity of the copper. Common refining methods include electrolytic refining and fire refining. Electrolytic refining uses the principle of electrolysis, with crude copper as the anode and pure copper as the cathode. The current in the electrolyte is used to precipitate copper ions on the cathode, thereby obtaining high-purity copper.
